What should I keep stocked up in my kitchen?

‘What shall I eat tonight?’ is a common question we ask ourselves constantly as students, be it in lectures, our walk home, sitting in front of the TV with a beer in our hands, pretty much all the time. If we’re not thinking about anything else, it’s usually about food.

So what do you eat tonight? Actually, more to the point…what do you actually have?

Obviously, we’re all different, we like different things, etc. But there are always a few things, or necessities as I call them, that we all have or should really have readily available and stocked up in our kitchen for whenever the stomach calls out to us.

So below are lists of ingredients you should have stocked up in the kitchen on any given day. They’re not exactly fancy stuff, but they’re ingredients you should have which you would use in day to day cooking and also some ingredients to make that midnight snack you desire so much when you’re lying in bed wide awake. ;D

Obviously, if there are things you don’t like, you don’t have to have it…duh!

  • Butter/Margarine
  • Cheese
  • Milk
  • Pre-packaged Ham
  • Lettuce
  • Carrots
  • Tomatoes
  • Eggs


  • Frozen meat/chicken/lamb/mince/etc (Can be frozen from fresh or already frozen packages of meat)
  • Frozen vegetables (Whatever you fancy)
  •  Ice (For the booze :D)



  • Baked Beans
  • Tinned Chopped Tomatoes
  • Tuna
  • Tomato Soup
  • Curry Paste
  • Coconut Milk/Paste
  • Chicken/Beef/Fish/Veggie Stock
  • Pasta/Spaghetti/Etc
  • Rice
  • Bread
  • Flour
  • Cornflour
  • Breadcrumbs
  • White and Brown Sugar
  • Potatoes
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Syrup/Honey
  • Beer (Or generally alcohol, which I assume you are never not gonna be out of)


 Sauce, Condiments, Etc:

  • Ketchup
  • BBQ
  • Sweet Chilli
  • Light Soya Sauce
  • Sesame Oil
  • Mustard
  • Worcester Sauce
  • Vinegar
  • Red/White Wine
  • Dried Herbs/Paprika/Cayenne
  • Lemon Juice
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Olive Oil
  • Sunflower Oil
  • Mint Sauce 

So yeh, these are some of the things I recommend you keep in stock at all times in your kitchen as you will come to use pretty much all of it regularly during the year.

As always, if you don’t like something, don’t include it. If you think you have other necessities I haven’t put down, just do whatever you want.
